Vision insurance or medical insurance?
Vision insurance usually covers your yearly comprehensive eye exam and contact lens exam, and helps with the cost of glasses or contacts. Plans work in different ways: a set copay, an allowance toward eyewear, or a discount. Many also help with prescription sunglasses.
Medical insurance comes into play when there’s something going on with the health of your eyes: an injury, an infection, irritation, dry eye, or monitoring a condition like diabetes. Many medical plans treat an optometrist as a specialist, so expect your specialist copay at that visit.
Bring both cards if you have them
Have your insurance information ready: company name, policy owner name and birth date, and member ID. With both cards on hand, we can bill correctly no matter the reason for your visit.
Making your benefits go further
Vision discount programs
We honor most national vision discount programs. Let us know about yours when you schedule.
FSA and HSA dollars
Eye exams, glasses and contacts qualify, and you can use these accounts alongside your vision coverage. We’ll give you an itemized receipt.
Use it before it resets
Many vision benefits reset each year and don’t roll over. If you have benefits left, a second pair or prescription sunglasses is a smart use.
We check your benefits first
We check every patient’s benefits before the appointment. If something comes up, we’ll call you ahead of time, so there are no surprises at the front desk.
Ways to pay
Payment is due at the time of your visit. We accept cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, and FSA and HSA cards. Self-pay patients are always welcome.
Common questions about insurance
Do you take VSP?
Yes.
What if I don’t have vision insurance?
That’s fine. Many of our patients pay out of pocket. Text or call and we’ll tell you what an exam costs before you book.
Is a dry eye visit billed differently?
Often, yes. Dry eye is usually a medical concern rather than a routine vision check. Read about dry eye care.
